Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum's Birds & Brews
Birds & Brews, a 21+ after-hours event, on August 11th from 6:30 pm to 9 pm at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The event includes a special exhibition opening reception for our newest temporary exhibition, Avis Marvelous: Ornithology on the Western Frontier, 1776-1896, a collection of vintage engravings that illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. Guests will enjoy after-hours access to the museum’s exhibitions, and a meet and greet with one or more of our resident raptors. Raptor educators from the Discovery Center and the Freebridge Brewing team will be answering any questions you have about birds or beer in a relaxed social setting. Must be 21+ to purchase tickets and attend. Beer from Freebridge Brewing will be for sale. Food will be for sale while supplies last. Wine will also be available for purchase. This collection of vintage engravings illustrates the North American birds of the Trans-Mississippi frontier West (including Alaska), as portrayed by wildlife artists of note. The exhibit is partially a derivative of advancing 19th-century governmental survey parties, which were instructed to document natural history features of these mostly unknown territories. Also, the exhibit features artworks created by artists and publishers seeking to capitalize upon the growing worldwide interest in American ornithology. These talented bird artists include]ohn James Audubon, Daniel Giraud Elliot, Joseph Wolf, and Titian Ramsey Peale. This beautiful avian imagery is complemented by historical commentary, species traits, and information on current bird status. The prints are framed in handcrafted Butternut molding.
